Supporting Children's Learning

There are many ways that you can support your child's learning at home

You would have noticed these coming home each day:
Hold the cards up one at a time and encourage your child to read the word. If they say the word instantly you can place a sticker next to the word (or I can do this at school) if your child is unsure of the word, tell them what it says and have them repeat it while pointing to the word. You can also ask your child to locate the words in the book they have brought home.
The yellow spelling card can be used many ways:

  • Point to a letter on the card and ask your child to say what sound the letter makes.
  • Sound out a letter and ask your child to point to the letter that makes that sound.
  • Ask your child to find words in the coloured boxes as you say them or hold up a flash card.
  • Say words and encourage your child to sound out the beginning  letters and locate them on the card.
  • Encourage your child to write only in lower case letters by looking for them on the card.
Remember:
Short bursts of 'school work' after school is best!
If your child is tired, it is OK to leave word practise to the next day.
Find a time for reading/writing activities that suits both the child and yourself.
